Mount Abu in Western India is close to where the border to Gujarat lies. The mountain features a 9 km wide and 22 km long plateau. The highest peak of the mountain, Guru Shikhar, is at an elevation of 1721 m. Mount Abu is like an oasis because it is home to evergreen forests, waterfalls, lakes, and rivers.

This oasis located at an elevation of 1,220 meters above sea level, encloses a beautiful and serene lake. It is right at the top of a granite table peak in the Aravalli range. Mount Abu is also known as Arbudaranya in legendary stories. That name derives from a serpent god by the name of Arbuda. Folklore has it that this serpent descended to this area to save Nandi, the bull of Lord Shiva.

The sheer number of dig sites in and around Mount Abu attracts archaeologists. There are ancient Dilwara Jain temples that have marvelous appearances, and they too are tourist attractions.

Traveling Around Mount Abu

When you are journeying to this area, there are many options for travel that will be available to you.

  • Bus – If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive way to travel, there are buses here that are run by the government. While they are not the most comfortable travel option, for those on a budget they might be the most affordable. Bus fares are 10-20 Rs.
  • Taxi – When you are looking for a faster and safer method of transportation than the bus, taxis can be found in the foothills. The rate for the taxis is much higher though at 200–300 Rs.
  • Motorcycle – If you know how to ride then a rented motorbike might be a feasible option for travel. Bicycles are also available for rental. Renting a bike of either type is the most popular travel option in and around Mount Abu although it is also possible to rent cars. Renting a bicycle or motorcycle though will allow you to be more at one with the environment, and you can travel at your leisure when you are in the area. These rentals cost from 250–400 Rs.

Rail routes from New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Mumbai connect Abu Road, the nearest railway station that is just 28 km from Mount Abu.
