Things to See and Do in Srinagar
Nishat Bagh
Located near Dal Lake, this area is often referred to as the “Garden of Bliss,” mainly since it offers a stunning view of the lake as well as the snowcapped mountains in the background.
Shalimar Bagh
Shalimar Bagh is a famous garden that was originally established by Emperor Jahangir. Needless to say, it is a very famous tourist attraction in Srinagar today.
Chashmashahi
Chashmashahi is another beautiful garden that you won’t want to miss. It’s free to view, and there’s a lot to see.
Hazratbal Mosque
The Hazratbal Mosque offers some of the most beautiful and breathtaking artwork that you will ever see. There are plenty of walk-through areas to witness, and you can always purchase fresh food nearby.
Ziarati Hazrati Youza Asouph
The Ziarati Hazrati Youza Asouph is a mosque as well as a shrine. The tomb, commonly referred to as “Roza Bal” is believed to have held the tomb of Jesus. Several books and literature pieces have also made the area famous. It can be a little tricky to find if you’ve never been there so be sure to ask around. Photos or video taking is not permitted here.
Shankaracharya Mandir (Hindu Temple)
This Hindu temple was once dedicated (and still might be) to Lord Shiva. It can be reached either by car or taxi, and no cameras or cellphones are allowed. Once here, you will be able to witness a range of items, and there are even 250 steps that can be taken to reach the temple. You can also view the temple from the Dal Lake Area.
Himalayan Mountains
A lot of the hotels in the Srinagar area provide and organize excursions that you can use to see the Himalayan Mountains. These packages are typically quite affordable, and an honest guide who knows the land will guide you.
Dal Lake and Shikara Rides
You can take a Shikara ride on the Dal Lake which is typically quite cheap. It will provide you with the opportunity to witness a peaceful and stunning view while you relax onboard. If you want to get away from regular tourist areas, this is the attraction. Make sure that it features prominently on your list of things to see and do in Srinagar. Typically, there are a lot of bargains on offer for these trips, and it is an excellent way to see a lot in a short period. If you are going to be staying in Srinagar for a longer period, consider taking more than one of these incredible rides.
Floating Vegetable Markets
The benefit to doing this is that you will depart from a different part of the lake each time that the boat leaves. As a result, there will always be something new and exciting to witness and soak in. There is a must-see “village on the lake” which is basically where all of the locals live. That is where you can walk by floating vegetable markets as well as connect with the locals.
So, no matter how long you’re going to be staying, or what you like doing, there are plenty of things to see and do in Srinagar. Also, if you are in the mood for some more travel and exploration, you can journey to Leh. It takes around 45 minutes to reach Leh from Srinagar by air. Air India operates a solo flight every week that will take you to Leh.
